Greece has an Embassy in Abuja with parallel accreditation in twelve West-African countries (Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Liberia, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Guinea-Conakry, Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon). The Greek Ambassador in Nigeria has parallel accreditation to ECOWAS (seated in Abuja). The Embassy’s consular office was transferred from Lagos to Abuja on 1 June 2007. A process of activating honorary consular authorities in the twelve countries, for which the Greek Embassy in Nigeria has parallel accreditation, is under way. Nigeria has an Embassy in Athens.
Political Relations
The two countries’ relations are considered friendly. Cooperation between the two countries through the exchange of support for each other’s candidacies within international fora has been particularly successful. Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, can contribute to the consolidation of peace and prosperity in the continent, particularly given its active role within the United Nations and its traditional participation in UN peacekeeping missions. In the European Union, Greece is particular sensitive to issues relating to the African continent owing to its long-standing ties with the region.
Large Greek-owned companies have been operating in Nigeria for decades. Indeed, Greece has had traditional ties with Nigeria in the field of shipping. A big portion of Nigerian oil and natural gas exports are transferred on Greek-owned ships. The volume of trade between Greece and Nigeria is relatively high (€150 million in 2008).
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
The Greek Community numbers about 300 persons, mostly residing in Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria, and working as company executives in large Greek-Nigerian companies. A holy bishopric operates in Nigeria, based in Lagos.
