Diplomatic relations between Greece and India were established in May 1950. The political climate in the relations between the two countries is excellent, with relations being multifaceted, harmonious and warm, as the two peoples are linked by close ties of friendship and mutual cooperation, and represent ancient cultures.

Political Relations

The excellent climate in our political relations is confirmed by the frequent exchanges of high-level visits, by the carrying out of yearly political consultations, by the extensive contractual framework, and by the cooperation between the two countries within the framework of international organizations.

Cultural Relations and Greek Community

Greek-Indian cultural relations date back some 3,000 years. Cultural activities between the two countries include numerous events, including film festivals, book launchings, recitals, theatrical performances and exhibitions, while there are also a significant number of Associations and Unions in Greece and India that are active socially and culturally. Cultural/Educational relations between Greece and India are based on a Cultural Agreement implemented through three-year executive programmes.

Also noteworthy is the study of Greek language, history and philosophy at Indian universities via relevant Chairs and Schools, as is the cooperation between universities in the two countries (Chair of Greek Studies at the University of Jawarharlal Nehru, New Delhi; cooperation of the Indian side with the Economic University of Athens).
