Political Relations

The deepening of Greek-Israeli relations is based on the major potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in a number of sectors, including economy, trade, tourism, investments, agricultural development, defence, technology, energy, the environment, shipping and education.
The multifaceted cooperation between the two countries is aimed at promoting development and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. This cooperation does not exclude, and is not directed against, any third party, and it is dictated by the multiple security challenges in the region.
The institutional framework for cooperation between the two sides is the Joint Ministerial Cooperation Council agreed upon in 2011 and aimed at promoting specific cooperation programmes.
One major development in Greek-Israeli bilateral relations was Greece’s decision – in Law 4018/30.9.2011 – to allow Holocaust survivors and their descendants to regain Greek citizenship. This is a gesture of great sentimental and symbolic value, as – based on the aforementioned legislation – it gives all survivors of the Holocaust (born up until 9 May 1945) who had Greek citizenship at birth, but lost it as a result of their leaving Greece, the right to regain Greek citizenship.
Finally, special note should be made of the Greek state’s unflagging interest in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which is the living link between Orthodox Christianity and the Holy Land.
Greece looks forward to the development of energy cooperation with Israel, both bilaterally and, with the inclusion of Cyprus, trilaterally.
On 12 November 2014, Greek-Israeli bilateral political consultations were held in Athens, on the level of the Secretaries General of the two Foreign Ministries. The consultations focused on the development of trade and economic relations, the attraction of investments to Greece, and the promotion of cooperation in the defence and energy sectors. The will was reaffirmed for the scheduling of the second High-Level Cooperation Council in 2015, marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The bilateral consultations were followed, on the same day, by a trilateral meeting between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, also on the level of Foreign Ministry Secretaries General. This was the first trilateral political dialogue meeting between the three countries, reaffirming the will to prepare a trilateral meeting of Foreign Ministers that, in turn, will schedule a trilateral Summit Meeting.
