The Greek Embassy in Belgium opened in 1945, while prior to that, and starting in 1874, Greece’s representation in this country was undertaken by other Embassies of ours in Western Europe.
Political Relations
Greek-Belgian relations are at a very high level and are determined by the two countries’ participation in the European Union and NATO. The two countries also cooperate well on mutual support of candidacies in international organizations.
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
Indicative of the friendship between the two peoples, there is a large Greek community in Belgium, mainly in Brussels – where the Greek community is the largest in the consular region – but also in other areas, including Charleroi and Limburg. Some 35,000 Greeks reside in Belgium. Official Belgian data numbers Greeks in the country at 17,000, but does not take into account Greeks who have taken Belgian citizenship or work for international organizations and enterprises.
