Diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored in 1971. Greece is represented in Albania through its Embassy in Tirana, where Greece has an honorary Consulate, an Economic and Trade Affairs Bureau, a Press office, a Defense Attaché’s office and a Police Liaison office. Greece also maintains two Honorary General Consulates in Albania, in the towns of Gjirokastër and Korcë.

Political Relations

Greek-Albanian relations have a very broad contractual framework and there are frequent exchanges of visits at all levels. The two countries’ governments have expressed the political will to further promote bilateral relations, expand bilateral cooperation, and settle pending issues. Greece supported Albania’s accession to NATO, and strongly supports the country’s European course. It recognizes the progress made to this day in various sectors and concurrently encourages Tirana to continue with the necessary reforms in order to speed up their accession course. Compliance with the criteria for Albania’s accession course and the implementation of European standards is also of vital importance for the protection of the rights Greek National Minority.

Cultural Relations and Greek Community

There is a native national Greek minority in Albania; whose presence goes back as far as the 7th century BC. The vast majority live in the broader region of Gjirokastër, Sarande, Delvine, and Himarë, but many members of the Greek community are scattered around Albania. The Greek minority is a vital bridge of mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation between Greece and Albania. The Greek government systematically cooperates with representatives of the Greek community and the Albanian authorities; providing its substantial contribution on issues directly associated with improving conditions for the national Greek minority in our neighbouring country.
As part of university education in Albania, the Greek language is taught at the Department of Greek Language of the University of Tirana and at the Department of Greek language, literature and culture of the University of Gjirokastër.
