Greece’s diplomatic relations with China date back to 5 June 1972. Since that date our bilateral relations have been developing steadily, as reflected in the signing of the Joint Statement on a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in January 2006. The most tangible example of the dynamic in Greek-Chinese relations is the COSCO investment in the Port of Piraeus, which is constantly being upgraded through the expansion of port facilities, the linking of the latter with the country’s rail network, and the construction by Chinese companies of logistics centres around the port.
Greece maintains Consulates General in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
Political Relations
Greek-Chinese relations are at a very good level, as attested to by the frequent exchange of high-level visits. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s June 2014 visit promoted bilateral cooperation with China even further, not only on the political level, but also in the economic/trade and cultural sectors: The Strategic Partnership between the two countries was further deepened through the Joint Statement of the two countries’ leaders; a large number of trade agreements were signed, worth a total of over $6 billion; and an agreement was concluded on the reciprocal establishment of Cultural Centres in Greece and China.
The contractual framework, which is constantly being enriched, includes cooperation agreements in the sectors of economy, trade, science and technology, as well as in the social and cultural sectors. There is also a Greek-Chinese Friendship Committee in the Hellenic Parliament.
