Greek-Austrian diplomatic relations are on the level of embassies, which operate in Vienna and Athens. There is also a Greek Honorary Consulate General in Salzburg.
The two countries collaborate closely both bilaterally and within the EU, while there is also cooperation on mutual support for candidacies in international organizations. Greek-Austrian relations are very good on both the bilateral and multilateral levels and have been further strengthened since Austria’s accession to the EU in 1995.
Austria shows particular interest in developments in the Balkans, due to its proximity and historical ties with the region, as well as economic investment interests. Austria is also a strong supporter of the region’s European perspective.
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
The presence of Greeks in Austria is of historical significance and dates to the 18th century, with prominent figures including Rigas Feraios, Anthimos Gazis, Neophytos Doukas and the Ypsilantis, Sinas and Dumba families. Today, the Greeks residing permanently in Austria are graduates of Austrian universities and number some 5,000, half of whom are Greek citizens. Greek-Austrian friendship associations operate in Austria’s main cities.
