Greece is represented in Uganda through parallel accreditation of its Embassy in Nairobi, while Uganda is represented in Greece through its Embassy in Rome.
Political Relations
Greece supports the Ugandan government’s efforts at national reconciliation and reconstruction following the long-standing civil war and is participating in the mobilisation of the international community towards peace, security, stability and the respect of human rights in the broader Great Lakes region. Greece grants scholarships for the training of Ugandan officers in Greek Military Schools.
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
The Greek community in Uganda is very small. It numbers no more than 15 persons. The political instability of the ‘80s and ‘90s let to the departure of Greeks from the country, mostly to Kenya.
The Orthodox Holy Diocese of Uganda operates under the Patriarchate of Alexandria. It carries out a notable social and educational role. Through development assistance programmes funded by the Foreign Ministry’s Hellenic Aid, a medical centre has been set up and offers its services free of charge to local inhabitants in need. The Holy Diocese’s seat also houses a nursery, a primary school and a high-school.
