There is mutual representation on the level of Embassies, which operate in Athens and Madrid.
Political Relations
The bilateral relations between Greece and Spain – Mediterranean countries – are determined by close cooperation within the EU and NATO frameworks. Athens and Madrid maintain enhanced cooperation on the serious problem of illegal migration, which they have in common. The need for effective confrontation of the illegal migration pressures on both states in the Mediterranean basin have led to close cooperation both bilaterally and within the framework of the EU.
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
There is great interest in Spain with regard to modern Greek and modern Greek letters. A core of modern Greek philologists have undertaken satisfactory activities towards the dissemination of the Greek language and literature.
Some 2,000 Greeks live in Spain. There are Greek communities in Madrid and Barcelona. Most of the Greeks in Spain live in the autonomous regions of Catalonia (600), the Canary Islands (200), Andalusia (150), Valeria (100), and in Madrid (400).
In Madrid, there are two Greek community organizations: the “Greek Orthodox Community of Madrid” and the “Association of Greek Residents of Spain”, with small numbers of registered members. The community has also organized a Greek-language course for children of Greeks abroad and adults, held at premises offered by the Orthodox church. The Greek community of Barcelona also offers a Greek-language course to children of Greeks abroad.
