Morocco : Michelle Obama Visit For “Let Girls Learn”

Michelle Obama, her daughters Malia, Sasha and her mother Marian Robinson arrived in Morocco on Tuesday  morning, where they were welcomed by King Mohammed VI’s wife Princess Lalla Selma at the airport.

Michelle Obama flied to Marrakech, not to enjoy the splendid nights of the ochre city, but for a serious issue. “Let Girls Learn” is the American initiative struggling against the exclusion of girls from education, that brought to this moderate north African country, Michelle, along with American actress Meryl Streep and Indian actress Freida Pinto, both very active in promoting the education of girls.

Michelle Obama held talks with a successful bunch of Moroccan girls who debated over the different problems that hinder girls’ access to education. Michelle Obama was impressed by the advances made by Morocco in order to generalize the education of girls, especially in rural areas, where girls tend to quit school early for economic and geographic reasons.

Morocco, in fact, is among few countries in the developing world, which have devoted special strategies to promote the education of girls. For instance, the National Charter for Education and Training which was launched in 2000 has resulted in remarkable advances. Girls have now more chances to pursue their educational career thanks to the government’s efforts, but also to multiple associations that support the government’s strategy through fund and awareness raising to fight against the exclusion of girls from education
