Malawi has withdrawn its recognition of the ghostly “SADR”, Malawi’s Foreign Minister Francis Kasaila announced Friday in Rabat.

“The Republic of Malawi has decided to withdraw its recognition of the SADR, which it recognized on March 6, 2014, and to maintain a neutral position vis-à-vis the regional Sahara conflict”, Kasaila said at a press briefing following a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Nasser Bourita.

Malawi supports the efforts of the United Nations, through the Secretary-General and the Security Council, to achieve a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the dispute, he added.

“Our country wants to make a positive contribution to the UN process by maintaining a neutral position without pre-judging its outcome”, he said.

Malawi’s Foreign minister also expressed his wish that “this position of neutrality and support for the UN process will send a strong signal to all the parties concerned in favour of a solution to this long-standing regional conflict”.
