The Hellenic Republic has been represented in France on the Embassy level since 1833, just three years after the founding of the modern Greek state (1830). Greece also has the following Consular Missions in France:
Consulate General Marseille
Eleven Honorary Consulates (Ajaccio, Corsica; Bordeaux; Cherbourg; Grenoble; Le Havre; Lille; Lyon; Nantes; Nice; Saint-Etienne; and Strasbourg)
A sub-Consulate in Calais
The French Republic is represented in Greece on the Embassy level.
Political Relations
Relations between the two countries have deep historical roots. Today, Greece and France cooperate closely within the framework of the European Union and other international organizations. The excellent level or our bilateral relations with France is reaffirmed by the frequent exchange of high-level visits.
Cultural Relations and Greek Community
The Greek Missions in France – in cooperation with Greek communities and selected French agencies – organize notable events. The French Institute in Athens is at the forefront of France’s cultural presence in Greece. Some 15,000 Greeks reside in the wider region of Paris, Lille and Lyon. In the region of Southern France, the Greek community numbers some 20,000.
Ethnic Greeks in France maintain strong sentimental ties with Greece, despite being assimilated into French society, and have distinguished themselves in the arts and sciences. Greece has been a full member of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) since 2006.
