Diplomatic relations between Greece and Slovakia began when the latter gained independence on 1 January 1993, while Greece’s representation in Slovakia dates from the establishment of the Greek Embassy in Bratislava in September 1996.


Political Relations

The accession of Slovakia to Euro-Atlantic institutions (EU and NATO) in 2004 further strengthened Greek-Slovenian relations, which, beyond their bilateral dimension, include cooperation as EU partners and NATO allies.


Cultural Relations and Greek Community

Educational relations between the two countries are regulated by the 1976 Agreement on Cultural and Educational Cooperation between Greece and Czechoslovakia. It was agreed that the Agreement remain in force following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
In Slovakia, Modern Greek Language is taught at the School of Philosophy of Comenius University in Bratislava, with some 70 students and 3 instructors. 1400 Greek students reside in Romania.
There is a small Greek community in Slovakia. There is a Slovenian-Greek Friendship Association, most members of which are Slovakian.
Greece is the second most popular tourism destination among Slovakians (120,000 visitors per year). A Tourism Cooperation Agreement has been in place since 1980.
