The operation of the Greek Embassy in Libya has been suspended.

Political Relations

Geographical proximity and the age-old Greek presence on Libya’s coast render the two countries natural partners. The contractual framework of bilateral relations is very developed and covers a wide range of sectors (economy, political consultations, culture, defence, etc.).
Also traditional is the military cooperation between Greece and Libya, which dates from the 1960s. Over 230 Libyan officers have graduated from Greek Military Academies, where over 50 Libyans are currently studying.
Our country assisted Libya politically and humanitarianly during the 2011 revolution and afterwards, with 5,000 Libyan wounded receiving treatment in Greek medical institutions. Our country’s contribution to the success of operation Unified Protector was decisive to its positive outcome.
In the new era for Libya, Greece participated, together with its EU partners, in the consolidation of security conditions, the building modern rule of law, and the reconstruction of Libya in a number of sectors, including those of construction, shipping, trade, maritime transport, health and tourism.
In July 2014, Libya entered a period of turmoil and clashes.
To confront the Libyan crisis, the Secretary General of the United Nations has appointed Bernardino Leon his Special Representative for Libya.
With very few exceptions, the diplomatic missions of foreign states have suspended their operation. The Greek Embassy in Tripoli suspended its operation on 31 July 2014, proceeding to an operation for the evacuation of a total of 186 Greek and foreign citizens (Chinese, Cypriots, Belgians, Britons), who reached the Port of Piraeus on the naval frigate “Salamis”.
